The Design of Everyday Things – Book Review

Berlyn Fernandes - Don Norman Book Review

Author: Donald A. Norman.

He is an American researcher, professor, author and the director of
The Design Lab at University of California, San Diego

There have been two titles of this book. Don Norman’s academic friends praised the first title, The Psychology of Everyday Things (POET). The Design of Everyday Things (DOET) was a more meaningful title that better reflected the book’s contents.

Don Norman’s book, ‘The Design of Everyday Things’ (DOET, 1988), encourages readers to
take what is often overlooked with more thought, providing the groundwork for what good
design should be using his expertise as a cognitive scientist and usability engineer. As well,
he clarifies by giving examples of good design in providing not just functionality, but also
efficiency, ease and satisfaction to the user through thorough examples of poorly designed
products that caused people to make mistakes and placed their lives at stake.
